6th Annual Dukes of Ale Spring Thing

an AHA Sanctioned Beer Competition

Judging: April 19-21, 1996


  1. ELIGIBILITY The contest is open to all homebrewers, regardless of location. Beer brewed by more than one individual must list the names of all brewers. All beers must be made in the home. Entries brewed at any commercial brewing establishment are ineligible.

  2. WHAT A $3 fee will be charged for each entry. Make checks payable to the Dukes of Ale. Two bottles per entry must be submitted. Bottles must be at least 12 oz., glass (preferably long-necks). They should not have silk screened markings or labels of any kind. No PLASTIC or Grolsch swing-type bottles will be accepted. All entries received shall become the property of the Dukes of Ale. Entrants cannot enter more than one beer per subclass.

    A completed bottle id form must be attached to each bottle. Entrants submitting more than one entry may identify all on a single registra- tion form. Additional registration forms may be used if needed. Checks should be stapled to the registration form.

  4. JUDGING Judging will take place on Friday evening, April 19, 1996 and continue through Sunday, April 21, 1996. Potential judges should call Jeff Graves at home (505) 884-4335 home. BJCP judges are especially welcome. The AHA/HWBTA 50 point scoring system will be employed for judging entries.

    All entries deemed exceptional during the first round of judging will be sent to a second round to determine best of category / show.

  5. AWARDS Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, respectively, in each class provided a minimum score of 35 for Gold, 30 for Silver, or 25 for Bronze has been achieved. Additionally, ribbons will be awarded for Best of Category and Best of Show. As an added bonus the Rio Bravo Brewery in Albuquerque will attempt to reproduce the Best of Show recipe to be served on premises. Additional prizes may be awarded.

Classes/Subclasses:

Each contestant will indicate on the entry form the class in which the beer is intended to be judged. For example, American Wheat would be designated as 10a (i.e. Class 10, Subclass a). Meads are indicated my an M followed by the sub-category number (i.e. Metheglin is designated M5).
