Another View of Second Street ----------------------------- Sandy James Recently I had a chance to check out the second of the Santa Fe brew pubs to open; Second Street Brewery. It looks completely different from the last time I was there, long before walls were completed. I found it to be a delightful place, I even ran into Ray and Rosemary Tell. Clearly, it is appealing to clientele with discerning taste! The food is good solid pub fare. The house special is a Shepherd's Pie, reported by Ray to be very good. Rosemary liked her Chicken Pot Pie and Craig enjoyed his Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. My Welsh Rarebit was very good but too rich as a main course. It should be enjoyed by 4 or 5 people as an appetizer. The house salads were enjoyable as well. I found the beer to be extremely good. They have 3 brews on tap at the moment, a pale, an ESB and a Cream Stout. The pale ale was refreshing. I think head brewer Rod has managed to brew an interesting light beer for the masses (those BudMilCoors drinkers who venture into a brewpub). I thought it was nice and fruity with some definite hop characteristics. It will be high on my list in the hot summer after mowing the lawn. The ESB was my personal favorite with plenty of character and hop flavor. They should have an IPA available mid-January. I expect it to be equally great.
