Internet Explorer 3.0 Problem

There is a bug in Internet Explorer 3.0 that causes it to malfunction after recalculating the Beer Recipator spreadsheet many times. After the 15th or so calculation, some edit fields may display random characters instead of the proper values. At that point, IE basicly starts behaving in strange ways and becomes unusable. This apparently happens with IE versions 3.0 and 3.01. IE 4.0 doesn't exhibit this problem.

The easiest work around is to use another browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer 2.0 or 4.0. However, if IE 3.0 is all you have, the following will help.

When IE 3.0 starts to behave erraticly, do the following:

  1. Close all the open browser windows.
  2. Restart Internet Explorer.
  3. Open the "Options..." menu item in the "View" menu.
  4. Select the "Advanced" tab.
  5. Click the "View Files..." button in the "Temporary Internet files" section.
  6. Once the list of files appears, close the "Options" dialog by clicking the "Cancel" button.
  7. Go back to the files window.
  8. Select "Details" from the "View" menu.
  9. Select "Refresh" from the "View" menu.
  10. Click the "Last Accessed" tab until the most recently accessed files appear on the top (you may have to scroll the list of files to the right to see this tab).
  11. The last recipe you were working on should appear near the top.
  12. Drag (don't double-click) the icon onto the browser window.
  13. If the recipe doesn't appear right (or is missing data), drag the next file onto the browser.
  14. Minimize the "Temporary Internet files" window so you can use it later (be sure to refresh the contents when using it again).

You may want to add this page to your "Favorites" menu for quick access in the future.

Apparently, IE has problems with having so many input fields on the spreadsheet. It appears that it doesn't free up the resources for these fields when displaying a new page and these resources quickly clog the system when using the spreadsheet many times.
